In doing so, I’ve worked with a plethora of different hosting companies; yet WPX hosting is the one I return to time and time again as their combination of affordable plans and a commitment to delivering some of the fastest speeds of any hosting company makes them an ideal fit for my business.

But are they the right fit for you?

To help you make that decision, I’ll talk you through everything you need to know about pricing, performance, and customer service, as well as share all those key details that can help you decide whether to sign up with WPX is the best move for you.

What is WPX?

Founded back in 2013, WPX hosting is a relative youngster in the world of web hosting, especially when comparing its nine years in business to the decades of experience boasted by the likes of Bluehost (founded in 2003) and GoDaddy (launched in 1997).

Yet already, the company has established a reputation as the go-to hosting company of choice for bloggers, small businesses, and online entrepreneurs such as myself.

One of the main reasons for this -and one of the main reasons why I ranked WPX number one in my guide to the best hosting companies for bloggers– is that the company takes a personal approach to the way they present themselves.

Unlike the number of nameless, faceless enterprises out there, WPX founder Terry Kyle puts himself front and center of the company’s website, explaining that, as a web entrepreneur himself, he encountered many of the same problems that many of us have faced when it comes to finding suitable hosting for our online ventures.

Fed up with working with hosting companies that over-promised and undelivered in terms of performance and customer service, Kyle established WPX to better meet the needs of those for whom reliable hosting is essential to running a successful business.

It’s partly because their founder seems to genuinely understand the challenges faced by online business owners that the company has developed such a large and loyal customer base, but, of course, being able to relate to their users isn’t all that WPX has to offer.

How Much Does WPX Hosting Cost?

Price alone shouldn’t be the only factor you consider when it comes to choosing a hosting company.

After all, there are scores of providers who promise “cheap web hosting” and ultimately deliver a cheap, sub-standard service.

Still, although it isn’t the only important factor, it’s often the first one most budding website owners look at, so let’s start with the cost of WPX’s three hosting plans.

As is fairly typical across the hosting industry, the company offers the best value for money when you pay for a full year in advance, as you get a lower per-month rate and the benefit of enjoying two months of hosting for free.

To be honest, I can understand how these pay-yearly deals may not be off-putting for small business owners and bloggers on a limited budget as – despite WPX’s affordable pricing- it’s still a lot of money to invest in service without first getting to test it out.

Fortunately, the brand does offer a 30-day money-back guarantee, so you’ve got a full month to put your chosen plan through its paces before deciding whether it’s right for you.

What’s more, if you do decide that paying for a full year’s worth of hosting is too much for you, you can always opt to pay on a month-by-month basis at prices that, though they’re far from the cheapest in town, are certainly very affordable compared to some of the bigger-name brands out there.

Still, the price tag alone is only part of the equation. It’s what you get for your hard-earned money that really matters, and to that end, I say WPX certainly delivers.

Bandwidth and storage allocations are only two of the features that make WPX Hosting a good value-for-money proposition for bloggers and business owners.

Regardless as to which plan you sign-up for, you’ll have access to many free features, some of which you’d typically pay extra for with other hosting companies.

One-Click WordPress Installation

The main highlight for me is the 1-click WordPress installation button which enables you to install WordPress the easy way in under a few minutes.

With around 43% of all websites on the Internet powered by WordPress, the platform is by far the most popular way to build a website thanks to its ease of use and endless customization options, so I’m always happy to see a hosting company that makes it as effortless as possible to set up a WordPress site.

Free SSL Certificates

I’m also a big fan of the fact that WPX offers unlimited free SSL certificates.

As I’ll discuss in more detail when talking about WPX security, SSL certificates are vital to the success of any modern website.

This is something that hosting companies understand all too well, with many taking advantage of the necessity of SSL certificates and charging a fee for them. Sure, some of the better hosting companies like Cloudways will offer a single SSL free of charge, but to have access to as many certificates as you need at no cost is honestly a pretty good deal.

Unlimited Email Boxes

Domain-based email is important for creating a professional image for your business or blog, so it’s a good thing that WPX allows you to create as many email boxes tied to your domain name as is necessary.

If you’re running an eCommerce site, for example, this would allow you to set up one email address for sales, another for returns, a third for complaints and feedback, and so on.

Alternatively, if you’re starting a blog and plan to have multiple contributors, you’ll also have the ability to give each contributor their own domain-based email.

Unlimited Free Migrations

If you already have your website set up with another hosting company, /`WPX will happily migrate it over to your site at no charge and do this with as many websites as you need.

This is a smart move, and I honestly don’t understand why all hosting companies don’t offer this service.

After all, while site migration may be somewhat complicated for technical novices, it’s hardly a major task for hosting experts.

It actually benefits the company, as the easier it is for you to set up your site on their server, the more likely you are to stick around long-term.

WPX Performance and Reliability

Having all of those features is a nice touch, but they’re no good if a hosting platform runs slowly or struggles with downtime.

Think about it:

If visitors land on your website and it takes a long time to load or is completely offline, they’re simply going to leave again.

This is why I always say that performance and reliability are the two most fundamentally important things to consider when choosing a web host. It’s also why I was initially drawn to WPX hosting in the first place, as they make a big deal about their lightning-fast performance.

Of course, this isn’t just a not-so-humble brag to get your money.

The brand’s three plans consistently score top marks from independent tests run by WpHostingBenchmarks.

Although WPX only offers a 99.5% uptime guarantee, WPHostingBenchmarks found that their actual uptime is closer to 99.9%, with the site noting that testing the site resulted in a “near-perfect…error freeload tests, near-perfect uptime and the fastest average response time.”

In all the time that I’ve been hosting with WPX, I’ve found my experience closely matches this assessment.

My sites enjoy the blazing-fast performance, and I can’t recall a single instance when I’ve had to deal with downtime issues.

Not that this should come as much of a surprise when you consider how much work WPX put into ensuring top-tier performance.

The company has dedicated data centers in the United States, United Kingdom, and Australia, allowing them to serve your content to users as quickly as possible depending on where they are in the world.

WPX even lets you pick which data center you want to host your site in to meet the needs of your users better.

A Custom Content Delivery Network (CDN)

WPX’s own in-house CDN boasts 26 global edge locations which again empower the company to deliver content at optimum speeds.

This free CDN was purpose-built for WordPress users, though there’s no reason why it can’t also be put to work on other types of sites.

Underloaded servers

One of the biggest criticisms of shared hosting companies is that they overload servers with too many websites to keep their costs down (and thus being able to offer “cheap” hosting).

While it may be a smart business move in terms of pure profit generation, an overloaded server basically means that every site on that server suffers as you have more sites competing for a finite amount of resources.

WPX do things differently by underloading their own high-spec SSD servers so that there are more bandwidth resources available for your site.

All being said then, if I only had one good thing to say about WPX (which I clearly don’t), it’s that they simply can’t be beaten on speed and reliability and score top marks in this category.

How Secure is WPX Hosting?

After the performance, security is the next major factor to consider when it comes to WordPress hosting.

WordPress is a popular target for hackers as it’s the most widely used website building platform out there, so it’s vitally important that your host does as much as possible to help keep your site and your customer’s data safe and secure as possible.

Again, my own personal experience is that WPX is better-than-average in this regard.

This is mainly because the company takes security seriously as a responsibility rather than an upsell opportunity.

Where other companies will simply encourage you to download one of the best WordPress security plugins or charge you an extra fee for security features, WPX includes malware removal as a standard free feature of all their plans.

The company runs daily malware scans across its entire system and acts immediately to remove any malicious files.

Elsewhere, the company’s own custom-made Web Application Firewall (WAF) runs 24/7, while server security rules are updated daily to overcome any vulnerabilities.

If you’re concerned about the cost of WPX hosting, these security features alone may help make their plans seem like a much better value-for-money proposition as you’d normally pay extra for such features.

Along with all that, WPX also offers:

DDoS Protection

Distributed Denial-of-Service (DDoS) protection prevents malicious attacks that slow your site down or render it completely unavailable.

Daily Backups

No matter how much protection a hosting company offers your site, there’s always the chance something might go wrong.

That doesn’t necessarily have to be a security attack. It could simply be a case of a human error that negatively impacts the way your site functions, or it could be a conflict between two plugins or a plugin and your WordPress theme, which renders your site unusable.

Should that happen, it’s good to know that you can roll back to the last known working version of your site, and that’s precisely what backups are for.

WPX provides automatic daily backups of your entire site, with those backed-up files stored on a secure server for 28 days.

You can also create a manual backup whenever you see fit.

Free Hack Cleanups and Site Fixes

The company’s commitment to providing high-level site security means your site should remain forever uncompromised, but if something does go wrong, WPX will provide any necessary clean-ups and fixes free of charge.

Free SSL Certificates

If you’ve never heard of SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates before, the easiest way to describe them is that they’re the tool that turns your HTTP website into an HTTPS and adds that padlock icon at the front of your URL in your web browser.

At least, that’s what it looks like on the front end.

Behind the scenes, SSL does much more than change how your website looks in the address bar. It encrypts data sent between your user’s browser and your website. Even if an unauthorized person did somehow manage to get their hands on that data, it would be indecipherable to them and basically useless.

If you’re inviting your readers to send you any kind of personal data -particularly sensitive financial data such as credit card details- then having an SSL certificate in place is essential in order to keep that data safe. Having access to as many free SSL certificates as you need is a big plus point.

How Easy is it to Use WPX Hosting?

So far, so good then, but what is it actually like to use WPX hosting?

It’s actually very easy.

Suppose you’re used to using hosting companies that offer the popular cPanel interface as a means of accessing your hosting features and installing websites. In that case, using WPX’s own custom-designed dashboard controls may take some getting used to.

In fact, I’ll admit that as a long-time cPanel user, it did take me a bit of time to get comfortable with WPX’s way of doing things, but the fact that the dashboard is clearly laid out and well-organized certainly means that even those with little to no experience of working with a web host will have no problem navigating their way around.

Getting Started with WPX Hosting

WPX’s user-friendliness starts right from the onboarding process.

After selecting one of the three pricing plans, you’ll be asked whether you already have a website or domain name or need to purchase one.

If you’re starting from scratch and don’t yet have a domain name, I recommend buying one from a third party, as even though it will be easier to set things up if you buy yours from WPX, you’ll save money by getting one from elsewhere.

Next, you get to select which of the company’s three international data centers you prefer to host your website.

The trick here is to pick the one closest to your target audience, as this will mean that WPX can load your content faster for them.

If you’re in North or South America, for example, you’ll naturally want the Chicago data center, while Europeans and those in Africa should opt for the UK center, and those in Asia and Oceania are better served by the Australian data center.

Finally, you simply create an account, enter your payment details, and you’re ready to start using your hosting account immediately.

Once you’re in, you’ll be taken to your WPX dashboard, which provides an overview of your hosting plan and any domains connected with it.

To use your hosting plan, you click the orange “Manage Service” button.

This brings up an overview of your billing details, server information, and the option to check out how much of your bandwidth and storage allocation you’ve used up so far.

On the left-hand side, there’s an easy-to-navigate menu that gives you access to all of your key features, including the ability to manage and install websites, set up and manage email boxes, handles your backups, and more.

To create a new website, first, click “manage websites” followed by “+Add New Website.”

In the pop-up box, simply choose the domain name you want to use for your website (this should be the one you entered during the sign-up process) and check the “install WordPress” box.

That’s literally all there is to it.

The one-click installation wizard will then do its thing, and your new WordPress website will be up, running, and ready to use.

WPX Customer Service

WPX may be a breeze to use, but if you’re an absolute beginner, then you may still need a little nudge in the right direction when it comes to figuring things out. That’s to say nothing of the fact that even us seasoned pros still run into unexpected problems from time to time.

When that happens, it’s essential to have quality customer service on hand to help out.

One of the few disappointments about WPX Hosting is that they don’t offer telephone support.

If you’re the sort of person who prefers to speak to someone over the phone, this could certainly be off-putting.

However, what they lack in phone support, the company more than makes up with exemplary live chat support.

WPX promises an average live-chat response time of under 30 seconds, and while I can’t say for certain that they’ve achieved that every single time I’ve accessed support, I can say that I’ve never had to wait more than a minute.

More importantly than the response time, however, is the quality of support provided, and, fortunately, WPX excels here too.

Rather than outsourcing their support, WPX has its own in-house team of knowledgeable WordPress experts, which means when you talk to them, you’re talking to people who really know what they’re doing.

As a result, I’ve found that the majority of my support requests are resolved at the first line of contact, often in no time at all.

WPX Hosting Reputation

So, that’s my verdict, but what do others have to say about WPX Hosting?

The company currently boasts a 4.9 rating on TrustPilot with 2,199 reviews at the time of writing, the majority of which are overwhelmingly positive.

Most of the praise for WPX focuses on their excellent customer service, though people do also like the lightning-fast performance speeds.

Of the small handful of negative reviews that do exist, a lot of these seem to be based on issues to do with third-party services outside of WPX’s control or from individuals using WPX for sites such as non-WordPress eCommerce stores, which the company themselves admit they’re not the best option for.

Is WPX Hosting the Best Hosting Company for Your Site? My Final Verdict

So, there you have it, everything you could possibly need to know about WPX Hosting.

Though they’re certainly not perfect (the lack of phone support is particularly disappointing), the company is almost untouchable when it comes to blazing-fast performance and outstanding customer service, but does that mean they’re the best hosting company for everybody?

Not necessarily.

If you’re a blogger, small business owner, or budding online entrepreneur and you plan to use WordPress to grow your brand, then yes, I highly recommend WPX Hosting as they’re WordPress specialists who cater for -and genuinely seem to care about- independent businesses and solopreneurs.
