So, you’re ready and raring to go when it comes to starting your new blog, but coming up with the best blog niche ideas to actually focus on is proving impossible.
It may be that, no matter how hard you try, you just can’t seem to come up with a good subject to focus your attention on.
Or perhaps the opposite is true: You’ve got a whole blog niche list full of amazing ideas and can’t seem to narrow down to just one.

Over the past several years, I’ve developed a multi-million dollar portfolio of content websites across a wide variety of genres. In doing so, I’ve learned more than a thing or two about how to pick a blog niche that really works.
I’ll share everything I’ve learned with you below, and if, after all that, you’re still not sure what your blog niche should be, I’ve even provided you with a blog niche list of more than 100 profitable ideas.
What is a Blog Niche?
A blog niche is essentially the subject or topic your blog focuses on.
A niche can be anything. Literally anything. If there’s something that you’re interested in, whatever that may be, it can be your niche. The trick, as you’ll discover throughout this guide, is to decide on a niche people are interested in and build an audience base for growing.
That niche can be vastly broad or can be very narrowly specific.
Choosing to write about cars, for example, is an example of a niche that is incredibly broad as it could cover a great variety of different subjects. This has the advantage that there are no doubt millions of people out there who like cars and, thus, might be interested in your content.
On the downside, however, “cars” is such a broadly non-specific subject that it might be harder to build up a loyal audience who are interested in everything you have to write about.
Think about it:
Just because someone enjoyed your review of the new Audi doesn’t necessarily mean they’re also going to want to read your Top 5 BMW Maintenance Tips.
You could, of course, then narrow things down even further and choose that you’re only going to write about Audi cars. Sure, you may not attract all of the BMW or Porsche fans, but you’re going to have a much better time building up a regular readership among Audi enthusiasts.
Even then, you could get even more narrowly specific by choosing to write about a specific aspect of Audi cars such as:
- Audi reviews
- Audi maintenance
- Audi history
- Audi corporate news about the company
And so on.
Honestly, there’s no right or wrong answer here. You can be as broad or as narrow as you like with your niche, as long as you understand what that might mean for your potential growth and audience size.
There aren’t even any rules that say you’re only allowed to write about one niche per blog.
If you decide that you love writing about personal finance and health, for example, nobody will come along and tell you that you can’t. Instead, they’ll remind you once again that readers probably aren’t going to be interested in all of the different things you want to talk about. Thus you’ll find it harder to build a regular audience than you would if you focused on one particular subject.
Why Do I Need to Have a Blog Niche?
The truth is that no rule says you need to have a blog niche before you can start a blog.
By all rights, you could learn how to install WordPress right now and start writing about anything and everything under the sun, and nobody will stop you.
However, as the old adage goes, just because you can, that doesn’t mean that you should.
Coming up with potential blog niche ideas and picking just one to focus on will ultimately help give both focus and purpose to everything else that you do.
It will help you develop great blog post ideas that people want to read so that you’re never short on traffic-generating content.
It will help you to create a style, tone, and blogging voice that appeals to a specific audience so that you stand a better chance of building up that all-important loyal audience.
In other words, while determining a niche may not be crucial for starting a blog in the way that, say, picking out a web host may be, it is an essential step if your blog is going to achieve any kind of long-term success.
The only question then, of course, is how do you pick one?
How to Choose a Blog Niche?
The best blog niches to write about are those which find themselves right at the heart of a four-way intersection between your experience, your passion, your audience’s passions, and overall profitability.
This isn’t rocket science.
It all comes down to choosing something that you enjoy writing about, that other people enjoy reading about, and -if this is important to you- that has a history of generating decent revenue for other bloggers in that niche via things like Google Adsense or affiliate marketing.
So, how exactly do we get ourselves along that intersection and find the perfect blog niche for us?
There are a few simple steps to achieve this:
1. Create a Blog Niche List
Grab a pen and piece of paper and come up with as big a list as you can full of as many potential ideas as possible.
At this stage of the game, it doesn’t matter if those ideas are awesome or awful. It only matters that you get them down on paper so that you can weed out the crud and focus on the good later down the line.
If you have no ideas and your mind is drawing a blank, the following prompts should help you to come up with something:
- Look around the room you’re in right now. What do you see? What items or objects in that room relate to your hobbies, interests, passions, or beliefs?
- What have you done today? This week? What aspects of your day-to-day life interest you enough to want to blog about? What do you do that’s unique that other people might want to read about?
- What -if anything- are your friends, family, and colleagues always asking for your help? Chances are, if people you know need your help and advice, there are plenty of other people out there who also do.
- What’s been the hot topic of conversation among your friends or any online groups you’re a part of?
2. Pick a Passion
If you took those prompts to heart, there’s a good chance that you came up with a whole list of potential blog ideas. So now the goal is to whittle all those ideas down to just one that you’re going to make the focus of your new blog.
Starting this process helps to eliminate any blog niche ideas that don’t spark a level of enthusiasm and excitement within you.
Sure, you might have looked at those prompts and realized that people are always asking for your help to fix their laptops or smartphones. Still, if you don’t actually find this all that interesting, then you’re probably not going to maintain the motivation to keep a laptop repair blog or tech tips blog going for any length of time.
On the other hand, if you looked around your room and saw your guitar, you probably realized that you could talk about music forever and never get tired of it, meaning it’s a much better option.
One way to determine if an idea is really worth pursuing is to think about your blog 12 months down the line.
Make no mistake about it; building a successful blog can be a long, hard slog. To really build a loyal audience or achieve whatever goal you set out for yourself in your blog content strategy, you’re going to have to keep creating high-quality content for weeks, months, and perhaps even years down the line.
Is your passion for a particular idea enough to keep you doing that? Are you going to be just as excited to be writing about that topic in 12 months’ time as you are now?
If so, it’s an idea worth keeping. If not, that idea just isn’t going to be enough to sustain your motivation so that you can keep putting in the time and effort needed to create a blog.
This is true even if there’s a large audience interested in your niche and plenty of income-generating opportunities to be seized upon.
Seriously, you could have the most popular blog in the world and be making a decent income regularly, but if you just don’t care enough about what you’re doing, there’s a good chance you’ll end up giving up when the going gets tough or when your attention turns to something else new and exciting.
The bottom line is to start with something you’re genuinely passionate about before anything else.
3. Find Out if There’s An Audience for Your Niche
You could have such an unwavering passion for 18th-century bagpipe music that you could take about it for hours and never get bored, but if nobody else cares, then it’s unlikely that they’re going to want to read a blog on that subject.
On the one hand, this may not necessarily be a bad thing. But, on the other hand, if the only reason you’re starting a blog is that you love writing about those old-school bagpipe jams, and you don’t care whether anybody else reads it or not, then there you go; you’ve got your niche.
However, if you’re like most bloggers and want to create a blog that people will actually read, then you’re going to have to discover which of your passions those people are also passionate about.
The good news is that this is pretty easy to work out, and there are a number of tools to help you.
The free Google Trends application, for example, will help you to determine whether or not people are searching for your niche subject and what the current popularity of that niche is among users of Google search.
Type in a key term relating to your preferred niche (“18th century bagpipes,” “how to start a blog,”) and Google Trends will show you a graphic detailing the level of search interest in that term over the past year.
Using this approach, you get a good idea about whether people are interested enough in your niche to make it worth your while blogging about.
From there, you can engage in keyword research by searching for specific terms relating to your niche in tools such as SEMRush’s Keyword Magic Tool. This will give you precise details about search volumes for those particular keywords.
As a general rule, if your main terms are generating a few thousand searches each month, that confirms that there’s enough audience out there to validate your blog niche idea.

4. Determine Profitability
To be fair, not everybody wants to learn how to monetize a blog and generate income from their efforts. But, on the other hand, some people are more than happy just to create content that people enjoy.
If that’s you, you can pretty much forgo this step altogether and get started on your blog, knowing that both you and other people have enough interest in your preferred niche to help make it a success.
However, if you want to make money from blogging, the final step should be to determine the profitability of the niche you want to write about.
Again, this is a part of the process that’s pretty straightforward to tackle.
5. Look at What Others are Doing
First things first, check out other blogs in your niche.
Are they monetized?
If so, how?
If they’re displaying ads within their content, that shows you that there’s an opportunity to do the same with your blog.
If they’re linking out to products as an affiliate partner, that’s another potential income stream for you.
There may not be an accurate way of determining precisely how much your competitor’s blogs are making. The fact that they’re monetized in the first place should show you that your niche can at least be profitable if you put enough effort into your content.
6. Check Out Affiliate Opportunities
Head to Amazon and look for products relating to your niche. That could be certain tools of the trade, equipment, or even books and other media about your chosen subject.
All of these products represent income-generating opportunities for you as you can sign up to the Amazon Associates Program and earn a commission. It’s simple, every time someone clicks on a link from your website to a product on Amazon and ultimately buys that product, you earn a commission.
Outside of Amazon, many companies and services (particularly, but exclusively, in the digital and tech industries) also have their own affiliate programs where you can make a pretty sizable income from referring sales to them.
7. Think Outside the Box
Ads and affiliate links may be the main ways to make money from blogging, but they’re not the only ones available.
If you’re blogging about a niche that you’re an expert in, you can take that expertise and package it into consultancy services, courses, or eBooks.
If you’re blogging about something you make, such as arts, crafts, or food, there’s no reason why you can’t sell your finished products directly via your blog.
If you’re writing a blog that helps people solve a particular problem, you could potentially sell resources to help them further. A running blog, for example, might sell training schedule templates or dietary guides for marathon runners.
Whatever the case may be for you, think about if there’s anything you could offer that your users couldn’t get anywhere else and that they’d be willing to pay for you. In doing so, you’ve already increased the profit potential of your new venture.

To explain what I’m talking about, let me give you an example:
Let’s say that you know for certain you want to start a blog about caring for dogs.
That in itself is a niche, but right now, you’re really into talking about caring about your own Labrador. That’s what you want to focus on, and so you name your blog something like Labrador World or Labrador Training Tips.
So far, so good, so sensible. You’ve narrowed your niche even further, and that’s only going to help you start to build that audience.
Yet what happens if, down the line, you decide you also want to start talking about Border Collies or Greyhounds? Suddenly, Labrador World isn’t going to make a great deal of sense, and you’ll probably regret not calling your site something more generic like Dog Training Tips instead.
